Mr. Sanjay Prakash, Managing Director, SHiFT during Delivering sustainability in large developments, National Conference on Green Design 2013 The presentation was given in the background of the ongoing activity of the speaker on Master Plan preparation for IIT Jodhpur campus. Giving live examples of how communities respond to non-conducive situation as in desert and bring life to the driest of places with plants and habitat. The background references of various examples in and around Jodhpur on community initiatives to conserve water which also became places for socio-economic development. Citing similarity to a living organism, he talked about the complexities of a settlement and approach of designing such settlements on the principles of sustainability. He then deliberated on the desirable features of urban pattern with special focus on the 'identity'. An excellent complicated model drawing analogy of an urban pattern with metabolism of a low impact settlement was presented and explained at length. Interestingly, based on his own experiences he presented sic tactics to manage physical stock and flows in a community, viz., Use less with Factor 4 technologies for supply and social limits of sufficiency and equity on demand; Grow your own, tapping harvestable yields as autonomously as possible; Build two-way networks for security: every consumer is also a producer; Store a lot because renewable resource yields are often diurnal and seasonal; Transport less over shorter distances using least life-cycle cost technologies; Exchange using intelligent wireless networks to enable real-time trade and delivery of goods. He then explained the approach to mainstream green and sustainability for large development and settlements and how to go beyond (bringing in equity, sufficiency, resilience). ADaRSH along with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) and Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) is organizing its flagship event the National Conference on Green Design 4th edition in New Delhi on 14-15 February 2013. The two-day conference is held annually in New Delhi and is attended by over 450 professionals from different disciplines like architecture, engineering, construction companies, financing institutes etc. This year's conference has been designed and organized for deliberations on issues pertaining to green urban development. The conference aims to bring together pioneers in the field of green buildings, including policy makers and researchers together on one platform to share their experiences and view-points on the way forward for green habitats. On the sidelines of the conference, an exhibition showcasing green building materials, technologies and upcoming green projects will also be held. Industry stakeholders and green building design consultants are expected to participate in the exhibition.
