The World Trade Organization has decided to investigate whether American tariffs on steel and aluminum imports comply with WTO rules. China and the EU protested Wednesday, along with Mexico, Norway, Russia, Canada and Turkey, against those tariffs by Washington. The countries said the U.S. move was not for national security reasons, as Washington argued, but to protect its own economic interests. Meanwhile, the U.S. secured the establishment of four panels at the WTO, to examine counter-measures imposed by China, the EU, Canada, and Mexico on certain American imports. Those measures were issued in response to the steel and aluminum taxes. Washington has imposed a 25-percent tariff on imported steel, and a 10-percent tariff on aluminum.
