(9 Nov 2018) Italy indicated on Friday it had no intention of changing its budget plans to conform with European Union rules. Economy minister Giovanni Tria said tightening the budget in order to stay within EU deficit limits would be "suicidal" for an economy in marked slowdown. Italy has the weakest economy in the eurozone. The EU expects it to grow by just 1-point-2 per cent next year. Tria made his remarks during talks in Rome with Mario Centeno, president of Eurogroup, the 19-nation eurozone club. Centeno, for his part, sidestepped a question on whether Italy would face EU sanctions for breaching deficit limits. He said the issue of sanctions wasn't a matter for the Eurogroup "at this stage".
