The story told in my family is that my great-grandfather is the illegitimate son of a Duke of England.   I have never been able to confirm this story with solid evidence, but research does seem to confirm enough to make the story plausible.  When researching English Peerage there is a very shout list of possibilities who the Duke could have been, who was the paternal father of my great-grandfather.   If, in fact, the father of my great-grandfather was indeed a Duke, there would have been only one possibility.  He would have been Albert Edward, Queen Victoria's first son.  Edward would have been  in his early to mid twenties when my great-grandfather was born.  The story gets a bit more interesting, for several reasons.  One is that the last name of my great-grandfather started with him and that name was specifically made up because he was the illegitimate son of a Duke, as the story was told over generations.  In his early twenties, my great-grandfather travels to London, UK with his young bride to-be and gets married in London.  Although the marriage certificate lists a place for the father's name and occupation, the section of the marriage cert for my great-grandfathers name and occupation is left blank, but the cert lists my great-grandmothers father's name and occupation.  That is peculiar in itself.  My great-grandfather stays in London and they have their first child there.  Several years later he travels back to Italy and they have another child, then another child in France.  Then he travels back to London, UK and they have their 4th child. He then goes back to Italy and has his 5th child and then in 1901, my great-grandfather travels back to London, UK and is a permanent residence, since he appears on the UK census.  1901 is the year that Queen Victoria died. and Edward was coronated King Edward VII.  The timing of my great-grandfather's move back to London in 1901 is interesting.  Albert Edward, Queen Victoria's first son was known for having relations with many women. Edward also traveled to Italy many times.  It is in the realm of possibility that the story is true, that my great grandfather was the illegitimate son of a Duke.
