Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi proposed that the minimum wage of Malaysian skilled workers be set at RM3,500 per month, up from the current RM1,200 or so. This to match the minimum wage of migrant skilled workers in the country as well as to encourage more young Malaysians to take up the Technical and Vocational Education and Training, TVET. (Soundbite of Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi / Deputy Prime Minister Subtitle: Foreign skilled workers and expatriates, whose wages are approved by the Human Resources Ministry and Immigration Department, they are paid a minimum of RM3,500. Of course, we have to increase ours to at least match theirs. If agreed by the Cabinet, I will chair the TVET Malaysia Council so that not only the coordination, but also to ensure the recognition by a specific body can be done.)
