Musicians // Parents // Music Teachers - THIS IS IMPORTANT! Firstly, sorry for getting political in todays rant. I try and keep things to strategies and creative ideas to help musicians have a career but this week something happened to me which shocked me! I couldn't help with my kids music homework. I'm no music theory genius but I taught every aspect of the bass guitar course for years at both ACM and BIMM and all of a sudden I am thwarted by the homework designed for pre teenagers! Over the past few years I have seen too much history, geography and religion being brought into music classes at school and I can't see how it will inspire children to want to play an instrument. It's down to individual teachers to try and inspire these kids instead of the curriculum. Shouldn't music lessons be THE most fun lesson in the week... making noise, listening to music and experimenting with instruments of today and fun production games. I'm not talking about music reading in a generic music class... I mean being creative, learning how to play a simple groove on guitar, bass, drums, keys and brass etc... How on earth are we in a place when my child isn't interested in music lessons?! Sorry for the rant guys... but something needs to change before music lessons become pointless and extinct!
