Local group that helps the homeless is searching for a "home" themselves

CINCINNATI (WKRC) – Maslow’s Army has been feeding and clothing homeless men and women in downtown Cincinnati for a year and a half. 

They would set up shop every Sunday on Fountain Square, but this summer the organization is looking for a new home after being denied their permit for the summer.

"Last year, around this time, we were serving around anywhere from 500-700 individuals experiencing homelessness. Now we are at about 200 or 300 where we are setting up," said Sam Landis, President co-founder of Maslow's Army.

This past Sunday, the group went to 5th and Main to do its outreach at the same time and at the same place that used to set up shop on Fountain Square. It was empty, even after they were told the space was needed all summer long for events.

While the group has continued to roam the downtown area looking for a new home, there is progress being made. There's a meeting set up with 3CDC on Thursday. Coming to the rescue are city and county leaders such as Hamilton County Commissioner Todd Portune, who has gotten involved to help find a permanent home for Maslow's Army.

"I think we could use a little bit of compassion in our world these days," said Portune.

Several options are being considered for Maslow's Army's new home. One includes a space on Fountain Square and another in front of the Freedom Center. 

As for this coming Sunday, the group will be back at Fifth and Main passing out food, clothes,  hygiene kits and providing haircuts.
