The number of the day is 15%. This is the amount of energy that will be produced from wind - if government's energy plan until 2030 is implemented in its current form. The Integrated Resource Plan or IRP is a 20 year energy blueprint to meet South Africa's future power needs. And it was released today for public comment. This figure of 15% wind energy is important in many respects. It means government is committed to clean renewable energy that is crucial to combat climate change. A small amount of solar energy and 15% wind energy means there won't be an expansion of dirtier forms of energy like that coming from coal-powered energy stations. Coal still amounts for almost half the power mix but some old stations will be decommissioned. Gas is second and wind - at 15% - comes in at a close third. Something else that is very noteworthy is that new nuclear energy is completely off the table for now.
