Day 6 in the Atlantic, Day 23 in the Eastern Pacific
The first storm of the Atlantic hurricane season has formed in the past few hours in the Gulf of Mexico, and is expected to make landfall in Florida as it moves rapidly northeastwards in the next 24-36 hours. The storm is currently located just east of the center of the Gulf, and is currently moving slowly towards the north. Tropical Storm Warnings are in effect for much of the western coast of Florida, and Tropical Storm Watches are in effect for eastern Florida coastlines, as well as the coast of Georgia, South Carolina and parts of North Carolina. Additionally, parts of Florida and southern Georgia are under flood watches, and this is expected to be the main concern for the region. However, storm-force winds are also likely for these areas, with higher gusts. Winds are unlikely to be above 60mph, though.
Invest 98W also formed today, and is currently located to the east of the Philippines, and is expected to move slowly northward. Models are currently hinting at it, or a system associated with it, to eventually develop into a tropical cyclone and affect the Bonin and Izu island chains of Japan in a few days.
