Local couple returns home after being stuck in St. Martin due to Irma

HEBRON, Ky. (WKRC) - A couple whose honeymoon in St. Martin was ruined by Hurricane Irma has made it home safely.

Brian and Gormah Hilson returned from St. Martin Tuesday night. They were on their honeymoon when Irma slammed into the island.

The hotel they were staying at became a shelter and they were put to work. They had to ration their food and work together to search for anyone who might be missing or injured. The couple was worried it would be weeks before they'd be able to come home.

"We're just glad to be back. We had to go through a lot to get back here to Cincinnati, but with the help of the family and with a lot of love and prayers, we were able to make it back to Cincinnati safe and we're thanking God for it," Brian Hilson said at CVG Tuesday.

The couple says it was impressive to see people from all over the world come together on the island after the hurricane. They say they've learned not to take anything for granted.
