Sometimes I will challenge myself to write a song under certain constraints - to force myself out of my normal creative bounds. This is one of those times. For this song I gave myself a strumming pattern to work with. It is in 6/4 time with only downstrums occuring on beats 1,2, 3 and 4. This pattern is present during the verses. No restrictions were made on key. My original idea was to make the strumming sound like an echo, but as usual, songs find their own path. So here is what I came up with. It is relatively new and, again, outside of my normal comfort zone, so mistakes are abundant in both playing and singing. I'm interested to hear how everyone feels about this one. To me, it kind of sounds like something Dr. Seuss would write after a bitter break-up and a three day bender. As always, comments are greatly appreciated. Thanks for the listen. Lyrics ---------------------------------------- Yes, you need something You always need something This something, that something Over again Take what you need But you never give nothing You always need something And something some more The choice is mine I like to insist But those pleading eyes Are hard to resist Oh, how I could soar If I could close that door Your words like clay Are molded with ease Never with any Substance beneath Promises, promises Just this one thing How many times Will I still believe Oh how I could soar If I could close that... Oh how can I soar With you back for more Relationships are give and take So you like to say Well we've got that down Yes, we've got that down I give... You take --------------------------------- EDIT - I had a request for the chords so here they are. Anything I don't know I will just type as a tab. My guitar is tuned down a full step so ignore the capo. I am tabbing as if in standard: Verse - Dm, Bb7, Am7. Two chord transition to refrain - (X-0-7-6-6-0), A7 Refrain - Gm, F(5-3-3-5-3-3), Bb7, A7, Gm, F(normal), C7, A (with a C# bass note) Interlude - E7, B7 (repeats a few times), E7, F#7, A7, G#7, C#m (walk the bass note down C#-B-Bb-A), B7sus4, B7, E7-B7 again, D7, G The ending is just like the refrain except I use alternate variations on Bb and A. Bb (10-8-8-10-8-8) A7sus4 (5-7-5-7-5-5) The ending chord is a D7 I hope that helps!
