CINCINNATI (WKRC) - A new study out of the University of Albany shows the possible connection between antioxidants and the regression, or slowing down the growth, of breast cancer. Antioxidants are compounds that are found primarily in brightly colored fruits and vegetables that inhibit or stop what we call oxidation, which is a chemical reaction that can produce damage to cells in the body, making them more susceptible to diseases such as cancer. Researchers at the University of Albany recently found that pomegranate extract, which is high in antioxidants, can alter the characteristics of breast cancer stem cells, possibly inhibiting cancer progression. The same lab is also looking into the role of other antioxidant-rich foods and nutrients in cancer prevention. Other examples of antioxidant-rich foods include: oranges and carrots, which are also high in Vitamin C and carotenoids; spinach and tomatoes, which include lutein and lycopene; and foods high in selenium and fish oils, such as as nuts and salmon.
