ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- What will become Asheville's biggest brewery already has a new neighbor looking to locate right across the street. The New Belgium plant in West Asheville is under construction right now, but is not scheduled to begin brewing beer until sometime before the end of next year. However, a husband and wife team already plans to build townhouses with an unobstructed view of the brewery. Wanda and Joel Wingerter call their stretch of four lots lining Craven Street the "hoppiest" place in town. In sight of a major construction project well underway, their much smaller development is a conceptual work in progress. The couple's plan is to build a group of townhouses -- an amount still to be determined and approved -- not directly facing the main brewery, but overlooking what will be the park and tasting area. The Wingerters believe Brewery River Row will be a perfect fit for eclectic Asheville. "So many have come from all over the world to be here, to be part of this synergistic cornucopia of colorful consciousness here," Joel said. They say make no mistake, there is also the concept urban development and improvement in mind here. "Craven Street needs to be cleaned up, and hopefully we'll be a major part of doing that," And perhaps, also a way to help tie together two sides of town divided by the French Broad River. The couple told News 13 any artist renderings are literally still on the drawing board, but the design will fit the area and the same community spirit they believe New Belgium will bring. As far as a timetable, there's still work to be done with the city. If all goes as planned, the groundbreaking ought to happen sometime in March. _______________ Follow WLOS on social media: WLOS ABC 13 News on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/News13/ WLOS ABC 13 News on Twitter: https://twitter.com/WLOS_13 WLOS ABC 13 News on Instagram: https://instagram.com/wlos_13 Subscribe to WLOS on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/ABC13Channel/?sub_confirmation=1 Listen to AnchorMOMS, the Podcast: https://wlos.com/news/anchormoms/anchormoms-the-podcast Watch more top local news stories: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kk8Ge6UXHJs&list=PLkVbaoT-aYbIvnEpR0Ct5QQQqYaORUSUH For all of the day’s top local and national news, visit http://www.wlos.com Watch our live newscasts and other live video at https://wlos.com/watch Have a news tip?
