The scholarly study of the Bible has hit a wall. Nothing too relevant has come out in a hundred years except for countless, dubious theories on who Jesus really was (as well as other Biblical characters). A rapid changing civilization of science, secular ethics and freedom of religion has made the once authoritative morality of the Holy Canon almost inconsequential. Even worse, archeology, new historical data, the Gnostic Scriptures, The Dead Sea Scrolls and other factors have diluted the Bible to the point of transparent fiction, regardless of how theologians struggle against these tides. Are Biblical studies nearing extinction or perhaps is it time to relegate them to the patronage of Churches and their interpretations only? We witness what might be an ongoing slow train wreck or perhaps a bump in the road of understanding the Bible. Astral Guest-- Hector Avalos, author of 'The End of Biblical Studies', 'Fighting Words: The Origins of Religious Violence', 'Can One Know God if God Exists?' and Professor of Religious and Near East Studies at the University of Iowa.
