Kenya's planned nationwide fuel-hike protest fails

Plans by some motorists in Kenya's capital, Nairobi, to paralyze road transport in the city on Wednesday collapsed as most motorists ignored the call to block major roads. Lobby group, Motorists Association of Kenya, vowed to mobilize car owners to park their cars on major roads and highways from 7.30am this morning - a call that went unheeded. Instead, a small group of truck drivers parked their trucks just outside the CBD, complaining that the rising fuel costs would cause them to incur major losses. Government plans to implement a sixteen per cent value added tax on petrol and diesel from the first of next month. This brings the cost of a litre of Diesel up to a dollar and thirty cents.
