Westwood Shopping Center, Bethesda, MD. Welcome to the first episode of Westbard: The Last Stand. In this ongoing program, you will enjoy film of the Westbard Sector and reality-TV coverage of the revision of the sector plan. This neighborhood commercial area has been purchased by Capital Properties of New York, and is targeted for massive redevelopment. The nearby residents are overwhelmingly opposed to the proposed 12-story buildings. That proposal is not allowed under current zoning. Hence, the developer and county government must respect the concerns and wishes of the neighborhood to proceed. In this series, enjoy the Westbard Sector as it is today - a vibrant area providing neighborhood amenities. A shopping center with long-time, local, family-owned businesses. Historic architecture abounds. It may not be around forever. (In fact, the Giant Food storefront logo in this film has since been replaced). The developer and Montgomery County Planning Board want to make a neighborhood center into a regional destination. Follow the ongoing saga as citizens make what is quite possibly the "land stand" against radical overdevelopment in existing, peaceful neighborhoods.
