Bamir Topi, President of Albania since 2007, has worked hard during his tenure to campaign for Albanian membership of the EU and NATO. In 2007, gripped by party in-fighting, the legislature elected Topi after three failed votes. Though backed by the Christian Democratic and Republican parties, President Topi is politically impartial. He also holds a doctorate in Biology.
