Acclaimed French filmmaker Mathieu Kassovitz directs this powerful drama based on a shocking true incident. In 1995, Kassovitz received worldwide praise for his blisteringly angry film La Haine, which centred on a group of disaffected French youths. In Rebellion, he dramatizes the 1988 cave hostage crisis that took place on the island of Ouvea, a French territory in the Pacific Ocean. A group of indigenous Kanaks kill four people and take 20 others hostage whilst storming a police station on the island. A group of elite police led by Capitane Legorjus (Mathieu Kassovitz) arrive on the island with the aim of concluding the drama peacefully. However, Legorjus finds the army have already been given orders to end the uprising as quickly as possible, and no political help is forthcoming as the French presidential elections are underway. Rebellion is an incisive, heart-rending examination of colonial politics, in which there are no easy answers for those caught in the middle of a conflict.
