Fairfield Township couple develops device to save kids in car seats

FAIRFIELD TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WKRC) - A small prototype is the result of a husband and wife working together. 

Grant Striemer is an engineer and Maria Striemer is a nurse. They call their invention the "Backseet Buddy." Maria felt compelled to come up with something after seeing a distraught father at the hospital.

"I was working in the ER one night,  and a father came in with his child that he had accidentally left in the car," Maria said.

The more they saw kids dying in hot cars on the news, the harder they worked to come up with the technology. Grant is a problem solver by nature and used his 3D printer to help.

Grant said, "What we did initially is prove that the concept worked, and so after the first soft launch last fall, we said okay let's spend a little bit more time, make the app, let the app be ready to go in the app store."

The device works with a smart phone and an app. If you go too far away from the car seat, you'll get a notification on your phone every minute.

Grant and Maria are aware of the judgment parents who've left their kids in the car face and say this device is designed to help prevent tragedy.

"It's peace of mind that you can see. That's why we say that. It's like anything else that you would purchase. You put a life jacket on your child if you send them out, just in the event of the 'what if,'" Maria said. "So we're hoping that there's less judgment about what's happening and to understand that this is something that it is, but this is a remedy for that."

The couple is working to get financial backing. They're hoping the "Backseet Buddy" will be available in 2019.
