Dana Point Whale Watching passengers aboard Capt. Dave's Dolphin and Whale Watching Safari got a huge surprise today and yesterday when our catamaran sailboat encountered giant Blue Whales off the coast of Dana Point, California.

We expected to see Gray Whales that are making their annual migration from the cold waters off Alaska to the warm lagoons in Baja where they mate and have their calves. Captain Dave was vacationing there recently with his family and captured an incredible video (http://youtu.be/BFk3QK1fmcw?hd=1) of a baby Gray Whale coming up to whale watchers to be touched and petted. We also anticipated that we could see large Fin Whales because they've been feeding in the area recently too. Instead of those types of whales, to the shock of crew and whalewatch passengers, we saw huge Blue Whales feeding just a few miles off the coast!

Blue Whales are the largest known animal to have ever lived. And though Southern California has the largest concentration of Blue Whales of anywhere on earth, they have never been seen off of Dana Point in February before. The earliest we've seen these gentle leviathans was in May. Typically Blue Whales are here feeding during the months of June through October. They feed on a tiny shrimp-like crustacean called krill.
