BOONE COUNTY, Ky. (Angenette Levy) -- For the first time the public heard from the husband of Michelle Mockbee as he testified in the trial of the man charged with killing her. 

Dan Mockbee testified that May 29, 2012 started like any other day. His wife, Michelle, left for work earlier than usual that morning to get the company payroll done on time. It was the day after Memorial Day. 

"She woke me up when she left. She always did," Mockbee said. 

Dan Mockbee also worked at Thermo-Fisher Scientific. He was second in command but was on vacation that week. Later in the morning, he started receiving texts and phone calls from employees who couldn't get in the building. 

"That they were getting turned around. The police were taking their information and telling them to go back home," Mockbee said. 

Dan Mockbee called Michelle and other employees but couldn't reach them. He called 911 to find out what was happening but the dispatchers couldn't tell him. He drove to the office where a sheriff's deputy took him into the break room. 

"He asked me a  couple of questions and I said 'sir, my wife works here. I really need to know that she's OK' and that's when he told me that she was deceased," Mockbee testified. 

When detectives asked Mockbee who would be capable of hurting his wife he named a couple of employees and David Dooley. Mockbee said he'd had some minor disputes with Dooley over something that needed to be cleaned and what he wore to work. Mockbee described Dooley as "shady." 

Commonwealth's Attorney Linda Tally Smith showed photos of Michelle Mockbee's office that contained awards for employees made of Waterford crystal. Mockbee also testified that his and Michelle's offices were the only ones in the building that were locked. Someone had broken into Michelle's office in 2010 and a deadbolt was installed. 

Dan Mockbee became emotional when asked about the couple's two children and had to take a break. 

"Yes, ma'am, I do. Two girls," Mockbee said. He nearly started to cry when asked their names. 

Testimony in the trial resumes Monday.
