http://www.TravelsWithSheila Khardongla Pass is just one of Ladakh's many, and frightening passes and also happens to be the highest, motorable passes in the world - 5,602 Meters...18,380 Feet! There are no guard rails. Traffic in both directions including trucks, motorcycles, cars and military convoys literally squeeze past each other with millimeters to spare. And there are frequent landslides. If that doesn't scare you enough, 400 people were rescued by the military in June, 2012; stuck when a heavy snowfall caused landslides. This "road" in the main way into and out of the Nubra Valley and the second time Steve and I have experienced traveling up and over the Khardongla; offering heartfelt prayers on the way up and on the way down that we were not going to do a "Thelma and Louise" and driving over the side into space.
