Karen is prepping Oliver, 14 months, for his Water Safety Drill by allowing him to experience a lesson while wearing clothes. She starts out with

- simple Polliwog Swims

- gradually adds roll-overs to back floating,

- gentle throws that resemble a fall off the wall

- and then actual falls from the wall, without having the teacher in the pool.

It is important that you prep your child for a Water Safety Drill, no matter how competent and confident they are. If they are accustomed to swimming with goggles, be sure they can swim and do the skills without the goggles, before you do the REAL DRILL, where they must fall into the pool at the very beginning of the lesson, without a warm-up lesson or practice in the water.

Oliver does pretty well in this lesson. Notice that he did have a bit of difficulty on one of times he was dropped in the pool. He probably would have handled it independently, but Karen was careful to keep him from getting upset, so she helped him out, preventing him from struggling too much. He did it correctly at the end.

NEXT LESSON... Oliver needs to be successful with this, on his first fall into the pool without practicing the skills first, as he did on this day of prep
