Meet Barclay Gebel, the Vice President of Operations at Concrete Strategies in St. Louis, Missouri. Barclay’s daughter, Raquel, was diagnosed with Wolfram syndrome, a rare disease that affects about 1 in 500,000 people. It began with diabetes and optic atrophy, which are the primary symptoms of this condition. There are currently no drug therapies or cures for Wolfram Syndrome, but participating in KIDstruction week is a way that you can help kids like Raquel.

What is KIDstruction Week? KIDstruction week is a designated week that construction, engineering, and architectural companies in the St. Louis area raise money for programs in the hospital. Employees who participate donate $1 or more for each hour they work during KIDstruction week and employers are encouraged to match the donations of their employees. The program has raised over $1 million since 2011 when it began, allowing patients like Raquel to have access to music and art therapy, the Family Resource Center and sibling playroom, and neuro-critical care.

The Guardians of Childhood is an initiative through St. Louis Children’s Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri that helps every kid be and stay healthy through a variety of programs. A key priority of the Guardians of Childhood is to discover better treatments and find cures for childhood illnesses and diseases. Thanks to innovative partnerships and generous donors, we are shaping the future of pediatric medicine.
