In New Zealand, the city of Christchurch and two other districts have declared a state of emergency on Tuesday after the remnants of tropical cyclone Gita slammed into the South Island.

According to local authorities, several homes were evacuated and dozens of schools were closed as the remnants of the storm pummelled the country, with heavy rain and flooding.

The storm was expected to take about six hours to cross the South Island, with the centre of Gita clearing the east coast around 3 am local time.

Even as the storm cleared, more rain was forecasted on Wednesday, exacerbating the flooding problems and hampering the clear up efforts.

Meanwhile, some flights in and out of the country's capital, Wellington and a number of other cities have also been cancelled due to gusts of wind up to 150 kilometres per hour.
