Kellogg Avenue mostly open after flooding; cleanup efforts continue

EAST END, Ohio (WKRC) - Flooding is a real headache for people who travel along Kellogg Avenue, but that should be improving as the waters recede and some roads begin to open.

Commuting will improve now that much of Kellogg Avenue is open--now only closed between Stanley and Wilmer avenues. Meanwhile, the cleanup from the flooding continues.

The high water from earlier this week has slowly receded. All that is left behind are the barriers and lots of mud and debris.

City workers were also hosing down a stretch of Kellogg Avenue. Others were still pumping out water from the basement of the Swampwater Grill and the adjacent Antique Mall. The restaurant was housing some of the antiques.

"It's a team effort, you know. We got to do what we can to help everybody out up and down the flood zone, and I don't want to see these people close down any longer than they need to be; I don't want to see them lose any of their product," said Chris Ornella of the Swampwater Grill.

Ron Rickels was one of the victims of the road detours. He was just trying to find a place to buy tires.

"I followed the detour sign to come here; I'm about 10 miles away now," he said.

While the floodwaters were receding, the University of Cincinnati rowing team's boats were still anchored, but the head coach was finding things where they didn't belong.

After flooding such as what we have experienced, a lot of different departments play a role in reopening a road such as Kellogg. You have police, public services, sanitation, the Ohio Department of Transportation and, of course, the worker who have been working hard cleaning things up.

There is no word yet when Kellogg will reopen at Coney Island.

Meanwhile, Mehring Way remains closed between Sixth Street and Freeman Avenue because of flood gates blocking the road.
