One Camden family is refusing to give up on a daughter clinging to life after a tragic accident. Those that love 1 1/2 year old Angelena Herrin describe her as a southern girl who loves the outdoors. It was that adventurous spirit that led to a heartbreaking accident. Kishra Thorne says on the evening of March 12, Angelena went missing and was found underwater in a pond at her grandfather's house in Hurricane Mills. She believes Angelena was without oxygen for 15 minutes. Doctors say in most cases, after that much time without oxygen, there isn't much hope."There have been people that have survived a long time without oxygen, but depending on the specific circumstances, of how long they were under, and how quickly they were revived, there could be permanent brain damage," says Emergency Medicine Physician Lara Phillips.The family says doctors at Vanderbilt Children's Hospital were able to save Angelena's life, but doctors told the family the damage was irreversible. Now, Angelena is at Alive Hospice near downtown Nashville. Hospice management says most patients that come there aren't expected to survive over 6 months. The family says Angelena has been breathing on her own for 2 days, but is otherwise completely unresponsive. As they wait to see if she will ever get better, the bills are piling up, which is why friends and family are selling tshirts to help them pay for her continuing medical care. Angelena's parents say they hope their tragic situation will serve as a warning to other parents of just how quickly a family evening can turn tragic.
