Tesfay from Ethiopia used to be a taxi driver who dreamed of one day owning a home in the capital, Addis Ababa. However, his meager income makes this dream impossible. Fortunately, after he took part in the construction of the Addisababa-Djibouti Railway—a project included in China’s Belt and Road Initiative, he was able to realize his dream. Tesfay bought his own house on an installment plan. “This was all thanks to the Chinese enterprise!” said Tesfay.

A railway can stimulate local development and benefit the people. It not only brings opportunity to ordinary people, but also helps enhance regional development. Five years after the Belt and Road Initiative was proposed, such positive stories have occurred all around the world. That is to say, the Initiative has been gradually affecting the global community in a good way.

For thousands of years, the Chinese tradition of friendship, kindness, and inclusion has nurtured the Chinese people to have a gentle temperament and consideration for others. Promoting a “community of shared interests,” advocating a “community of responsibility,” and building a “community of shared destiny” are made up of valuable experiences of China’s development and remain important propositions about the world.

During the construction of the Mombasa-Nairobi Railway, the shabby campus of Magrani School, which was located along the railway, caught the attention of the project management. They then decided to take two months to help build a new school building. At the ceremony marking the new semester, a student’s parent who worked for the railway said, “Chinese not only brought me opportunity they also renovated a school for children. Thank you for your contribution to the current and next generation of Kenya.”
