Between the weather, memorials to the victims of Russia and Germany with an eternal flame at one, memorials to others who died in the fight for freedom and the many derelict buildings that need to be resuscitated, Kaunas, Lithuania (and Latvia) are downright sobering. I can't even imagine living a lifetime of being occupied and repressed. Understandably, we noticed that the majority of people over 45 never smiled.
