ALWAYS CONSULT YOUR PHYSICIAN BEFORE TRYING ANY NEW DIET, WELLNESS OR EXERCISE PROGRAM. SOME OF THE ADVICE HERE MAY NOT BE SUITABLE. ________________________________________________ What’s important to remember is that, while you’re away from home, your alternatives may be a bit more limited and there is no point in stressing over your meals or obsessing over them. That defeats the point of living in a happy and healthy state of mind and honoring your body and your soul. So relaxing into it is half the battle. The next point would be to ensure that your immunity and your body’s defenses are nice and strong. In order to do this, I make sure that I take a probiotic every night before bed and a digestive enzyme with every meal. More than half of your immune function happens in your gut so a strong gut = strong immunity. I would definitely avoid airport and airplane food and if you MUST, make sure that you have smaller meals, filled with raw foods or whole grains. Take snacks like fruit spread and almond butter sandwiches with you for the plane ride and home-made trail mix to snack while at the airport. Drink LOTS and LOTS of water especially while traveling but also while away from home. Dehydration is very common after a long plane ride or while on business because we are running around taking meetings, meeting people, maybe even going out for drinks until late at night, your body needs to dehydrate to keep things moving. Speaking of moving, you need to make sure you are pooping every day while on the road. Take a magnesium citrate pill after dinner to make sure that things are being pushed out. You know me, I’m all about pooping. You have to take the crap out even on the road. While having dinners with clients, keep the meals light, and choose restaurants with healthier options so that you can choose salads as appetizers, vegetable entrees with lean protein and others. The salad and vegetable will act as portion control, plus will give you your much needed rations of fiber, phytochemicals, vitamins, enzymes. When we’re on vacation, we feel the like indulging a little bit. We want to experience new food and flavors or even eat the stuff we ate during our carefree, childhood days. That’s totally fine and in fact, I encourage you to do it. Just don’t do it for 3 meals a day, every day of your vacation. So designate one meal per day that will be your indulgence meal and embrace that meal with pleasure and without judgment. Also, make sure that, once you get to your destination, you search online for healthy restaurants, local markets and health food stores so you can do there and buy a few items that you can have for snacking, breakfast and drinks (coconut water kombucha and others come to mind). You can also ask the concierge at the hotels where you stay for some ideas. So which one of these tips are you most likely to implement first? Do you have other suggestion to do while you travel?
