“People don’t change by being scolded, insulted or ridiculed. They change through acceptance. In being accepted just the way they are, they become better people.”

I love those words. Those words cut through my heart like a knife, for there is so much truth in it. Especially in relationships. You’d think that if you stayed mad at someone for long enough, and you repeatedly tell that person what you’re mad about, all the time, they’d see the error in their ways and change. But it doesn’t really work that way, doesn’t it? Especially in relationships. You’d think that by hurting someone, they’d finally give up and give in to you. But they normally don’t. Instead, they’d turn and run towards the opposite direction. But if you accept that person wholeheartedly and love them for the people they really are, they would want to be a better person. For themselves. And for you. 

I hear these words a lot at weddings. I’d hear grooms promise to love his wife through thick and thin and I’d hear brides promise that they’d submit to their husbands no matter what. Then I’d hear the bold reminders from pastors or parents about acceptance. I’d realize again and again, as those words were spoken, the importance of accepting someone. Wholeheartedly. Because just as we are not without faults, so are they. And just as we want them to accept us just the way we are, we should accept them. 

These words were spoken, loud and clear, on the day Andy and Fanny were joined together in holy matrimony. And I stood there, with my camera, trying to take it all in, I made a mental note to slip in those words into this video I made for them, so that they may be reminded to accept each other through their journey of a lifetime.

Congratulations again Andy and Fanny. May your journey be filled with accepting each other, just as you are.
