This video is from IFTF's 2014 Ten-Year Forecast, which explores 10 bold projects that have the potential to change the world over the next 10 years. Read more about the projects here: http://www.iftf.org/tyf2014 It's only mildly metaphorical to claim that cities are alive. They take in energy, produce waste, grow, and eventually die. Following this metaphor, humans are akin to cells, or perhaps bacteria—a macrobiome, if you will. But the most important aspect of the metaphorical biology of cities is this: they evolve. This is not simply replacing old buildings with new or simply upgrading the sinews of roads and utilities. Slowly, over time, the very nature of how we create and change cities itself transforms. Wood gives way to brick, then to steel and concrete. Urban spaces designed for walking, public markets, and collective identities become spaces meant for mechanized transit, electronic signals, and iterative individualism. These changes aren't stopping. Rather, we're on the brink of another revolution in how we "city."
