Community gets $100K to repair seniors' homes

MADISONVILLE, Ohio (WKRC) - Madisonville is taking steps to help the senior citizens who live in the neighborhood live independently as long as possible.

The Madisonville Community Urban Redevelopment Corporation has been partnering with People Working Cooperatively to repair homes. Monday morning, 5/3 Bank donated $100,000 to help with effort. A few months ago, People Working Cooperatively installed a ramp at Jawee and Belinda Robertson's home.

"This ramp. It has really helped me a lot," Belinda said tearfully at a ceremony.

Belinda said without the ramp she would have trouble taking her sewing machine to her weekly quilting classes. Jawee, who volunteers with People Working Cooperatively, has trouble climbing the stairs.

"It means we can stay here. When you start to get up in age and you have problems walking, the ramp is a great asset to both of us because I'm having problems also because I'm a retired brick layer," Jawee said.

5/3 Bank president Tim Elsbrock said the company donated the money to help residents who are often the bedrock of the community.

"Belinda was telling me earlier that she's lived in Madisonville all of her life. And many of those people are the anchors, the stability. They've raised not only their children but grandchildren, children in the community," Eslbrock said.

Many of the repairs that people need cost between $5,000 and $8,000 but some fixes are less costly. The ramp may seem like a small thing to some people but to the Robertsons it means everything.

"I think it's great. It's wonderful a lot of people get to stay in their homes which hope to stay in my home as long as possible."

135 people are on the waiting list for repairs. Anyone who is 60 or older can call People Working Cooperatively at 513.351.7921 to ask about repairs.
