INTERVIEW STARTS AT MINUTE 25:00. All humans in one way or another are fascinated by the dark side of life-- evil, the morbid, and the macabre. We find levels of euphoria in our Schadenfreude: enjoying watching the great and the proud fall, others experience tragedy at a distance. Adults secretly lionize serial killers and ruthless dictators, while children are marveled at gruesome faerie tales. We set out to understand why and how we are drawn to the darkness of being from various points of view-- psychological, theological, instinctual, and artistic. From Aristotle to CG Jung, from the film SAW to the show The View, from the unfair murder of Jesus to the more than fair collapse of Tiger Woods, we go deep into the hellish domains of the human soul....and actually find that our attraction to the tragic contains liberating gifts and even the secrets to divine light.

Astral Guest-- Eric Wilson, best-selling author of Everyone Loves a Good Train Wreck: Why We Can't Look Away The Mercy of Eternity, Against Happiness: In Praise of Melancholy, and Secret Cinema: Gnostic Vision in Film, as well as Thomas H. Pritchard Professor of English at Wake Forest University.
