Bus Plunges Into Ravine Leaving 44 Dead

At least 44 people have died in Peru after a bus careened off a highway into a ravine. According to a survivor, the bus driver reportedly fell asleep behind the wheel. The crash occurred on a curve on the Pana-mericana Sur highway when it plunged some 100 meters into a ravine. Operator Rey Latino said the bus was carrying some 45 passengers. However, police said the figure was likely higher because additional passengers boarded along the route and did not appear in the initial register. The deadly accident comes after at least 48 people died in early January when a bus collided with a truck and careened off a cliff near the area of Pasamayo.
