Mr Dhiraj Wadhwa, Assistant Director, Commercial Sales, UTC Climate, Controls and Security, India spoke about energy efficiency solutions in HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) systems. HVAC is generally responsible for 40% of total building energy consumption. Of which, 17% is by chillers only, said Mr Wadhwa. With the advancement in technology, the chillers have now overcome the efficiency issue by incorporating VFD (variable frequency drives) on a system's compressors. Mr Wadhwa explained the participants that VFDs improve the chiller efficiency by dropping the rotational speed of a compressor in response to off-peak, lower-load conditions. This reduction in rotational speed means the compressor does not have to work as hard; therefore, the chillers consume far less power during off-peak conditions. As in case of air-cooled chillers having non-VFD compressors that operate at constant speed, even at decreased building load result in inefficient and expensive operation. Mr Wadhwa concluded his presentation by citing case study of a hotel building where VFD was installed on a screw chiller where 14% energy was saved in Delhi and 12% energy saving was observed in Mumbai, for which the payback period was 2 years.
