Businesses and Residents Inconvenienced From Bridge Closing

KENTON COUNTY, Ky. (Jeff Hirsh) -- The shutdown of a small Northern Kentucky bridge is causing big headaches for residents and businesses. The Richardson Road bridge goes over railroad tracks, and connects Independence, in Kenton County, with US 25 (Dixie Highway) in Boone County. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says a recent inspection found deterioration of one of the support beams, and so the bridge will be closed until a repair plan is drawn up and completed. A detour is in place, an approximately 15 minute drive. Businesses, like Beechgrove Self Storage and U-Haul, on the Independence side, are losing customers. Krystal Bowles, of that company, says 15 years ago, when we did the car count on this road, 14 thousand people passed by a day. Now we can count on one hand how many people are passing our facility. And Beth McCormick, who sits next to Bowles in the office, says, Weve lost a lot of U-Haul customers and have a lot of complaints because of the extra miles they have to pay for, and it takes them longer to get here.There is no estimate from state or county officials on when the bridge repairs will take place. Neighbors say the bridge has already been closed for about three weeks.
