Much of the Courtyard Apartment Complex in Pensacola is now destroyed. 
A blaze early Saturday morning left only charred remains of many resident's belongings.

Sudden banging on their door jarred Jose Barbosa and his brother from their sleep.

"I'm a hard sleeper and my brother heard the door and he ended up waking me up and all of a sudden one of the residents from downstairs said 'There's a fire, there's a fire'," said Barbosa. 

Barbosa says a resident that lived downstairs was going door to door, making sure everyone was ok.

He and his brother quickly got out but that's when he felt like something was wrong with him.

"I started feeling a little woozy, and I started telling them I might need to go to the ambulance because I couldn't breathe. That's when I went to the ambulance and they gave me the inhaler," Barbosa said. 

EMT's told him 10 to 15 more minutes inside his apartment, and he could have suffocated.

Barbosa says if it wasn't for his neighbor going door to door, he might not be alive.

"It still just scares me to this day that I could have been dead. That man downstairs is heroic for what he did. I'm feeling lucky, not just lucky but blessed. God had those people there that saved my life," said Barbosa. 

The Pensacola Fire Department says the fire is still under investigation.
