COLERAIN TOWNSHIP, Ohio (Liz Bonis) -- It is important to note that Norovirus has no specific treatmentThat means the Health Department will likely recommend care to ease the symptoms . We tend to think of this as one illness but more recently public health experts discovered there are more than 25 different kinds of norovirus. They were originally identified by the City of Outbreak so for example, one started as Norwalk virus. This is sometimes referred to as the cruise ship illness because you can now get it anywhere in the world. It tends to spread easily and quickly in close contact. It;s also more common in the winter when we have close contact indoors; likely the case of what's happening in the adult living home. You cant treat this virus, to treat the symptoms is the goal. The main risk is dehydration from the nausea and vomiting so fluids, space apart, extensive cleaning of surfaces is what we are likely going to see here. There is some extra concern because those affected may be older adults which sometimes means a weaker immune system. That makes them more vulnerable to this virus and the dehydration with it.Norovirus is a stubborn virus because it has an RNA sequence which has a coating on the outside of it. The only new research recently has to do with the fact that oregano may penetrate that. At the University of Arizona they found it could lead to an eventual new treatment.
