Dr R K Pachauri, Director-General, TERI setting the theme during the Leadership Panel titled 'Defining the Future We Want' at the Delhi Sustainable Development Summit 2013.

Speaking in the first leadership panel, Dr Pachauri set the theme by referring to "The Future We Want" outcome document of the Rio+20 where leaders of the world acknowledged that green economy in context of sustainable development and poverty eradication would lead to environmental sustainability and better management of resources. He summarized findings of a study on material flows by The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), which found that material consumption is also correlated to increasing carbon emissions. TERI's recent initiative on low carbon development with China's National Center for Climate Change Strategy and International Cooperation (NCSC) was also highlighted.

A planet of 7 billion people, a number that is growing every minute, is likely to face increased conflicts over scarce resources. So unless we begin to use our resources efficiently, we are likely to reach tipping points that will not only harm our own well-being, but also that of our future generations. The decisions we make today will define our tomorrow.

It is in this context that DSDS 2013 deliberated upon 'The Global Challenge of Resource Efficient Growth and Development'. For more information, visit http://dsds.teriin.org.
