Mr I. H Rehman in his interview with cleancooking.org, briefs about the dire challenges faced by the poor who often have very limited access to modern fuels for clean cooking. He adds that close to 800 million households in India alone depend on solid biomass as primary fuel for cooking. Burning of solid biomass in poorly ventilated kitchens using traditional three stone stoves sets the women and accompanying children at health risks. Further, black carbon emanating from the traditional cookstove adds to the regional and global challenge of climate change. Mr Rehman adds that the commercially available efficient solid biomass cooktoves are often expensive for the poor to afford. In addition to this, relatively higher efficiency cookstoves come with a fan which adds to the overall cost. In his interview, Mr Rehman discusses the innovative approach Climate Credit Pilot Project (C2P2) undertakes to facilitate access to improved forced draft cookstoves and augment adoption and usage by rural households. He appreciates the work that UCSD, TERI and Nextleaf Analytics have jointly initiated as part of C2P2.
