Bonsi is the Japanese art of container planting, traditionally in shallow rectangular pots. The idea is to replicate a gnarled cliff dwelling tree, usually an evergreen, with extreme attention detail. Branches are trained and pruned with every leaf carefully groomed to achieve the desired affect. To start a Bonsi garden, look for small or young trees to plant into a shallow container with good drainage. Prune and shape the trees as they grow using stakes and ties, or wrap the branches with flexible wire. Bonsi can be trained into a myraid of forms, and with proper care can last for hundreds of years
