Metro Hopes Smart 911 Can Help Domestic Violence Victims - John Dunn

In an emergency seconds count, particularly in a domestic violence situation.Now a new program is helping 911 dispatchers learn more about a victim's situation whenever they call for help.Smart 911 is a web-based program that gives 911 dispatchers critical information.    You fill out an online profile about your health and family, and the call taker can pull it up the second you call 911 even if you don't say a word.       Now, Metro is asking domestic violence victims to sign up.At Metro's 911 center the calls for help never stop, but a new program called Smart 911 is beginning to make a difference."It's got your health information in there, your kids information, what language you speak," says Metro Emergency Communication Center Director Duane Phillips.About 20,000 Nashville residents have already filled out a Smart 911 profile.     Any time a person calls 911, his or her  information shows up on the call takers screen.Now Metro is encouraging domestic violence victims to sign up, many of whom call 911 but are too scared to speak."And there's a lot of times that they won't talk on the phone because they don't want the other individual to know that they've used the phone," says Sgt. Jeremy Moseley with Metro's Domestic Violence Division.The Metro Police Domestic Violence division knows how useful Smart 911 can be.         Once online, victims can include information about their spouse or boyfriend, including any history of domestic violence or restraining orders.      Metro's says it's 100% private and secure."It changes our response, and it may heighten our awareness a little bit more and determine what type of factors we may use to respond to that particular situation," says Sgt. Moseley.Police and domestic violence advocates are handing out flyers to victims, urging them to sign up for Smart 911 right away.Metro's Emergency Communications Director encourages everyone to participate in Smart 911.      In an emergency.. information is critical."The more information we have about you, the more information we can relay to the first responders," says Duane Phillips.The city of Brentwood also participates in the Smart 911 program.         Signing up is free of charge and you can do it from your computer.Go to www.smart911.com for more information.For news updates follow John Dunn on twitter @WZTVJohnDunn
