Sugar Price To Drop By 10 Sen

The ceiling price for coarse granulated sugar and refined granulated sugar will be lower by RM0.10 per kilogramme effective September 1st. The new price of coarse granulated sugar is set at RM2.85 sen per kilogramme, while fine granulated sugar is set at RM2.95 per kilogramme. Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister, Datuk Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said this was due to the global reduction in the price of raw sugar as well as the rise in living costs. He said the drop in the price of sugar does not mean that the government supports the consumption of more sugar and added that it was hoped that the people would continue to adopt a healthy lifestyle. The minister reminded the public that excessive sugar consumption will increase health risks such as diabetes, obesity and heart problems. He said in 2016, over 3.6 million Malaysians aged 18 and above were diabetic. This number, he said will continue to increase of we do not take any measures to control sugar consumption.
