Wage Hope: Kickoff event held to fight pancreatic cancer

CINCINNATI (WKRC) - Survivors are sharing an important message on Tuesday: to “Wage Hope” against pancreatic cancer.

The special kickoff event was at the Kingsgate Marriott Conference Center on Tuesday morning at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, and dozens of people got together to celebrate a very personal story, one that is important to tell people about, because there has been progress and success in pancreatic cancer.

“Just with what my family has gone through and losing my dad, knowing that you need to raise money to fight this disease is why I am here,” said Pancreatic Cancer Action Network volunteer Maggie Paulus.

“The survivor rate has gone up to 9% so it was at 5% five years ago, so the fact that it’s almost doubled is huge progress,” said Maggie.

Dr. Vladimier Bogdanov and Dr. Syed Ahmad are both part of research studies.

“Trying to understand how pancreas cancer thrives, how it grows, how it spreads and preventing the processes that do those things… It will allow us… to diagnose earlier, treat effectively and help the patients live longer,” said Dr. Syed Ahmad.

And living longer is the real reason families came out to support the names they wrote on the Wage Hope cards.

The cards are all put together by the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network,

The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network has committed to raising $200 million toward doubling the rate of survival by the year 2020.
