The Meru County Government is taking steps to empower farmers in the region to embrace diversity and stop depending on traditional cash crops such as tea and coffee. Towards that end, the County's Department of Agriculture will distribute half a million seedlings of avocado in the next two years. The Lamb Hass species has been identified for the project which if successful, should see farmers earn at least one thousand shillings from each tree every season. Price fluctuations for the traditional cash crops have a tendency of providing farmers with inconsistent earnings hence the push to try out the new crop.
