Katherine Gorge borders on Arnhemland and functions as a sort of water buffer for this area. Arnhemland is a mainly aboriginal area. It is an upland plain which goes on to the ocean in the utmost north of Australia.
The water in the gorge is fresh. The crocodiles which live here are freshwater crocodiles. They build their nests on the sandy banks and lie here sunbathing. Freshwater crocodiles are also called johnstoni crocodiles.
Water is a necessity for all forms of life. The largest part of the Northern Territory has to make do with the yearly monsoon rains. In the period from October to January so much rainwater falls that all large watercourses, creaks and grasslands overflow.
The bowerbird has to perform quite a few impressive tricks to be able to breed. To start with, the male will only win a female if he shows he can build a truly fantastic nest. Easier said than done because the female is very fussy.
