Fancy Color Diamonds and How Cutting Styles Can Boost Color by GIA. How does a diamond's cutting style boost color in a fancy color diamond? In this video, John King discusses how cutting diamonds that are lower on GIA's D-to-Z color-grading scale, or lesser value fancy color diamonds, has a great effect on color appearance. For instance, a yellow diamond cut in a more contrasting pattern creates more of a mosaic appearance. The goal is to obscure or mask some of the inclusions for a better face-up appearance. This has a huge impact on the valuation of different colors of diamonds because diamonds once seen as flawed with many inclusions are becoming sought-after stones. The same is true for fancy color diamonds, like blue diamonds and pink diamonds that are cut to enhance and brighten the color appearance, resulting in fancy color diamonds with more vibrant colors.
