a critique of fightingatheist's definition of existence... *** Here is an excerpt from the last message I sent fightingatheist (and which he seems to refuse to read -- update: oh diem praeclarum: he at least read it!! --) with my attempt at a proper definition of existence... comments/criticisms welcome... "My objection, mainly, just concerned the logical flaw of your definition of existence. If matter/energy exist, they must, according to your definition, be composed of matter/energy, but this is simply wrong to say, which is a reductio ad absurdum of your definition. You may wanna think about treating the existence of matter/energy as primitive (unless you wanna say that matter/energy do not exist) and state something like: x exists iff x is matter/energy or is composed of matter/energy. But, I think that definition is still a bit odd. Existence is sometimes explicated as actuality -- rather clumsily too, as I think, but, I guess, you could say something like: x exists iff "x" denotes an object and appears in some sentence p, where p expresses a maximally consistent state of affairs s, and s is the case (or: actual). I don't think it's perfect but certainly better than yours."
