Professor Kiyoshi Hoshinos Laboratory at The Graduate School of Systems and Information Engineering at the University of Tsukuba presented a "thin, flexible pressure sensor that is like human skin" at Innovation Japan held in Tokyo.
A super flexible urethane resin similar to rubber was used to form an elastic film, and then two types of light were shined on that film to extract a change in shape. This was then used to successfully develop a pressure sensor that can be used to deduce three-dimensional information (contact location of the object, strength size, incident angle, and tilt with the contact point secured, etc.) from two-dimensional data. 
If joysticks that are used as input interface for games and such are equipped with the new sensor, subtle human muscle movements can be converted into signals. The university is also targeting developments of robots that move with dexterity using the same pressure sensation as humans by equipping the fingertips of robotic hands with this sensor.
